Kumbh Labs Sets Out People-First Vision for Indian AI
The research and development lab behind KumbhDoot aims to build AI that serves India’s people, languages and everyday needs.
Nashik, Maharashtra | 31 October 2026 — Kumbh Labs, an AI research and development lab, is expanding its work with a simple goal: make artificial intelligence useful for ordinary Indians. Its people-first vision focuses on turning research into practical tools that people can use without needing technical knowledge.
Kumbh Labs took shape during the development of KumbhDoot, an AI assistant built for the Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027. KumbhDoot was launched by the Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
KumbhDoot is designed to help pilgrims and residents access information about transport, bathing schedules, healthcare, emergency assistance and other local services. Its purpose is to make finding useful information simpler for people navigating the Kumbh and its surrounding areas.
The experience of developing KumbhDoot helped shape the lab’s wider direction: building AI around real needs rather than expecting people to adapt to complicated technology. This means paying attention to the languages people speak, their familiarity with digital tools and the conditions in which they seek help.
Kumbh Labs’ vision aligns with the broader objectives of the Government of India’s IndiaAI Mission. The lab aims to contribute to India’s AI journey through homegrown research and practical applications that bring the benefits of technology closer to the public.
While the Nashik Kumbh provides the immediate focus, the lab’s ambitions extend beyond a single event. Lessons from this work could help shape future tools for accessing information and local services in other parts of India.
At the heart of this effort is a straightforward belief: the value of AI lies in how well it helps people in everyday life.
